Have a Hydrated Mom Summer

Non-alcoholic beverages to enjoy all season long.

Summertime and the livin’ is not so easy if you’re a mom of young kiddos. During the pandemic summers of yesteryear, I picked up a not-so-delightful habit of reaching for a glass of cold white wine or rosé when the clock hit 4:58pm. It’s five o’clock somewhere became a little too real of a daily mantra. Waking up with a fuzzy, dull ache in my head before sunrise with my two-year-old son was not ideal. And then, I found out I was pregnant. . . again. And we were still living in a panini and there was no cold glass to reach for after a loooong day of parenting my two toddlers.

Now that my third baby is four months old, I could potentially imbibe a bit. Except I’m breastfeeding and sleeping like a four-month-old baby. (Thanks for nothing, four month sleep regression.) The few times I’ve had a glass of wine or my favorite IPA, the hangover hit before I even reached the bottom of the glass. It turns out sleep deprivation, toddler meltdowns, and alcohol aren’t the ideal mix that mommy wine memes tout.

But it’s summertime. And I want a cold beverage in my hand at the end of the day. And especially at my neighbor’s BBQ, or at the pool when the sun starts to cast that orangey glow and a beer just sounds good. Except it really no longer feels good. It’s finally a social summer again, except for many of us moms, social drinking isn’t the vibe. The consensus among Team Mom Group is that we’re just not here for the health setbacks, hangovers, and general blah-ness that shows up when drinking these days.

Enter the non-alcoholic bev. In our team’s hunt for a better option, we found Grüvi, an innovative brand making delicious and healthy craft beer and wine without alcohol.

We tried all their options to make sure we absolutely loved them. First up, we fell for the Juicy IPA from Grüvi’s Discovery Series. For IPA lovers (hello, it’s ya girl here in Colorado), this beer is packed with pineapple and nicely balanced with citrus and a hint of fig, so you won’t miss a thing. For those of us who prefer something a bit lighter, Grüvi’s Pale Ale has really balanced bitters and hops.

But for many of us, it’s about the wine. There’s something about the end of a long day and red wine while making dinner (also known as the 23452 meal of the day when kids are home). We do make-your-own pizza night or order out at least once a week during the summer. I really, really love sipping on an easy-drinking red wine while my kids cover my kitchen in tomato sauce. The mess just hits different, ya know? So our team decided to crack open the Dry Red Blend and it did not disappoint. The fruity and bold finish would pair well with nice steak, too.

Let’s be honest though, while we may not be brunching for four hours on weekends anymore, rosé while playing with a toddler all day sounds pretty damn ideal. It may not be al fresco eggs Benny time these days, but I dipped my feet in the kiddie pool and sipped on the perfectly sweet, thirst-quenching Bubbly Rosé — on a Tuesday. You’re not a regular mom, you’re a cool mom (who can still drive to pick the kids up from camp).

For more festive moments (like the first day the kids are back in school), we plan to pull out the alcohol-free prosecco. The Dry Secco from Grüvi is one of the best non-alcoholic drinks we tried — it’s crisp, refreshing, and tart. And it doesn’t come with a side of an all next day headache.

Shifting away from drinking feels seismic in a culture that promotes moms imbibing to relieve the very real incessant and relentless stress of momming. I’ve found when I share, “Drinking hasn’t been making me feel good lately,” that I’m met with nods of agreement— especially from other moms. As a breastfeeding mom of three under five, hangovers are not an option. But please, pass the rosé (especially when the bottle is this pretty). Cheers.
